Patricia Forde, Joëlle Dreidemy: Hedgehogs Do Not Like Heights

Natalien pikkusisko Lola on kiivennyt puuhun, eikä suostu tulemaan sieltä alas. Lolan päätä eivät saa käännettyä niin sisko kuin vanhemmatkaan, sillä hän kertoo olevansa hammaskeiju Fizzy Izzyn ja hämähäkki Salomonin häissä ja eihän häistä voi kesken juhlien lähteä. Ei etenkään, jos Grim-peikko menee ja muuttaa morsiamen siiliksi. Siilit näet eivät pidä lainkaan korkeuksista!

Vaikka luenkin suhteellisen paljon lastenkirjallisuutta, en voi sanoa lukevani juurikaan helppolukuisia, vasta lukemaan opetteleville tarkoitettuja kirjoja. Aika iso syy siihen on, etteivät ne useinkaan näytä tarpeeksi mielenkiintoisilta, jotta tulisin tarttuneeksi niihin muissa, kuin hyllytystarkoituksissa. Vaan elämälle kiitos, että satuin tällä kertaa tekemään poikkeuksen ja tartuin tähän uutuuskirjaan! Hedgehogs Do Not Like Heights on julkaistu banaanisarjassa, joka lienee tuttu kenelle tahansa, joka on ikinä sattunut kurkistamaan helppolukuisten kirjojen hyllyyn. Banaaneissa on julkaistu monilla eri kielillä kymmeniä, ellei peräti satoja eri nimekkeitä ja eri väriset banaanit kirjojen kansissa kertovat, minkä tason lukijoille mikäkin kirja on tarkoitettu.

Tämä kirja kuuluu sinisiin banaaneihin, eli keskitason helppolukuisiin. Vaan onneksi se ei vaikuta mitenkään tarinan laatuun. Hedgehogsissa on lyhyillä tekstinpätkillä ja iloisella kuvituksella onnistuttu rakentamaan yhtenäinen, monitasoinen ja riemastuttava kertomus. Forde tekstissä limittyvät perheen yritys saada Lola alas puusta ja Lolan kuvailemat tapahtumat hammaskeijun ja hämähäkin häistä ilman, että ne muodostaisivat epäselvän sekamelskan. Päinvastoin, tarinan vauhdissa on helppo pysyä ja niin riemastuttavasti se on kerrottu, että aikuinenkin alkaa sille väistämättä hihitellä. Koko lukukokemusta tukivat onnistuneesti Dreidemyn kauniit ja iloisen väriset kuvitukset.

Todentotta, tämä kirja oli erittäin hyvä maistiainen helppolukuisten kirjojen maailmaan ja innosti minua tutustumaan tarkemminkin, mitä niiden joukosta löytyy. Ainakin aion tulevaisuudessa tarttua ensimmäiseen Nataliesta ja Lolasta kertovaan kirjaan Frogs Don't Like Dragons.

That's because, according to her, she is attending the wedding of Fizzy Izzy the toothfairy and Salomon the spider and you can't leave a wedding in the middle of the party, can you? You have to say especially if evil goblin Grim comes and tuns the bride into a hedgehog! And hedgehogs, as Lola knows, do not like heights!

Even tough I do read quite a lot of children's literature, I haven't really read a lot of easy read books meant for kids who are just learning to read. To be honest, they don't usually look interesting enough to grab my attention. But I have to say, it was a lucky thing I came across this new book! Hedgehogs Do Not Like Heights is published in the Banana-book series, which has been published in several different languages. The different color bananas in the book covers tell the readers, to what level reader the books are meant to.

This book is a blue banana, which means it's a midlevel easyreader. How ever, luckily, that doesn't affect the quality of the story. Hedgehogs is told with short pieces of text and bright happy illustrations that together make a coherent and hilarious story with several different story levels going on simultaneously. In Fordes text   overlap the story of how Lola's family is trying to get her down from the tree and the story Lola is telling about the wedding going on in the tree. And miraculously, this all isn't a messy blur, but a easy to follow story that got at least me to giggle while reading. The illustrations by Dreidemy are a wonderful addition to the text.

If one wants to dive into the world of easy read books, this book was a wonderful starting point. For now on, I'll be much more interested in all the easy read books available. For sure I'll read at least the first book about Natalie and Lola called Frogs Don't Like Dragons.
